Traitor to the Living - Gordon Carfax did not believe that pseudo-scientist Western's machine, called MEDIUM, could communicate with the dead. No indeed. Gordon thought it might just possibly be alien messages that the machine was receiving. In any case, he had publicly challenged Western's position and since Western was making a handy living off MEDIUM, it behooved him to prove Carfax a liar. So he invited Carfax to inspect and even use MEDIUM - privilege which would normally have cost a great deal. In addition, Carfax had his own private axe to grind - quite aside from challenging MEDIUM. For Elizabeth Carfax, his cousin, had come to him in great distress, claiming that Western had murdered her father, Rufton Carfax, in order to get the machine.
