Joseph L. Green's first novel, a "fix-up" revised from "Initiation Rites," "The Colonists," "The Old Man in the Mountain," "Transmitter Problem," and "Refuge." All from New Worlds 1962-63. The planet Refuge was rich in strange animals and stranger plants, including the Grogroc- a 20 foot tall sort of sentient bulldozer; the Whampus- a whale-like creature on whom Loafer babies happily wet-nursed when momma needed a rest; and the Breswahr- technically a tree, but you never knew what was going on in its mind. Then there were the native inhabitants- the Loafers: humanoid, lazy, and able to exert mental control over the various species on Refuge. One day, Carey - a boy born and raised on Refuge - decided he wanted to take part in the Controller's Initiation rites of the Loafers. |
