Catastrophe Planet (1966) - an original novel with no previous appearance. It was as if the Earth had gone mad. New volcano chains were erupting everywhere, and earthquakes levelled the cities. For Mal Irish the last hold on reality was the embossed coin he had taken from the pocket of the now-dead man. Before he died, the sailor had quite a tale to tell - of a secret expedition to the Antartic, mastodons in harness buried in the ice, and men who weren't human who had followed him back to the U. S. A. after his escape. Once in possession of the coin, Mal found himself on a mysterious quest which led him to discover even stranger things - the girl who spoke the language of another world, the city under the ocean floor, and the deadly little men who followed him now. Once they capture him they want to ask him lots of questions - but Mal preferred to be the one asking the questions. [This is Laumer in "serious" mode - the kind I like best.] |
