|ex-ChUSFA: stamp on first inside page, page 85. MORE INFO|
Unclipped dustjacket has no tears and very little wear other than 2 closed tears (less than 1/2" each, at top edge of front cover); spine is slightly age-darkened. Inside of DJ has ten tape remnants from where a cheap acetate DJ protector was taped (that DJ protector was discarded.) A couple of "ChUSFA" stamps - no other marks or writing - a very clean copy that looks unread.
A collection of 2 novellas and a novelet by Damon Knight: Three Novels (1967.) In my opinion, "Rule Golden" is Knight's finest story, and the reason I recommend this book.
Original appearances in Science Fiction Adventures, Galaxy (both in 1954), and Infinity (1957.) The 1967 Doubleday hardcover was the first time these appeared in a Knight collection. All 3 pieces can also be found (in paperback) in Rule Golden and Other Stories (1979.) "Natural State" has been somewhat expanded as half of an Ace Double in 1959 as Masters of Evolution. I've read both versions and prefer this shorter one.Damon Knight was well-known as author, critic, and editor - a fan, member of the Futurians, editor (or assistant editor) of various magazines in the Forties and Fifties and the "ORBIT" anthology series in the Sixties & Seventies. He became prominent in the Fifties as a book reviewer/critic, and also for his stories (including "To Serve Man.") He married SF writer Kate Wilhelm, and died in 2002.
