Iron Cage, a novel by Andre Norton. Jony was the bright, Talented son of Rutee - a human woman who had been captured by aliens (Zahalan slavers, known by Jony as "Big Ones") for experimentation and forced breeding. At the time when the Big Ones were abandoning this world, Jony used his Talents to help Rutee and him to escape. She gives birth to twins in the wild, with the assistance of the natives of this planet. Rutee is always sickly after that, and after she dies, Jony and the twins are raised by the People, as the the natives call themselves. Years later, humans arrive and begin to capture the People, thinking them animals. Joby defends them, using his wits against sophisticated weapons, choosing to side with those who had raised him with care and kindness in preference to unknowns who may look like him. |
