West of the Sun (1953) - an early novel by Edgar Pangborn. After 11 years in space, the 4 men and 2 women of the Argo found the planet Lucifer to be lush, with two native species: a race of friendly white giants and a swarming population of wary red pygmies. They work to create a democratic society among the pygmies and their neighbors with the help of Mijok, the gentle giant, and his people. It looks like they are succeeding - until thrust into war with another and more powerful pygmy force. |
