The John Varley Reader - a massive retrospective, subtitled "Thirty Years of Short Fiction" (2004.) The first 13 pieces were previously collected in the 3 collections of the "first pass" of collecting Varley's short fiction; the last 5 pieces have not appeared in a Varley collection. If you want to find out what made Varley such a big deal in the late Seventies and beyond - read these. Highly recommended. As a reader at the time, "The Phantom of Kansas" and "Overdrawn at the Memory Bank" both impressed me and made me seek out more by Varley. There is another collection of the "second pass" - Goodbye, Robinson Crusoe (2013.) The combination of that collection and this one contain all but 2 stories from the set of his first 3 collections, plus the 5 newly collected here. (Introduction and story introductions by John Varley) The first appeared from 1974 to 2003 - (4) in Magazine of F&SF, (3) in Galaxy, (4) in Isaac Asimov's, plus New Voices 3, Blue Champagne, Universe 9, Twilight Zone, Stars: Original Stories Based on the Songs of Janis Ian, Lord of the Fantastic, Playboy. "The Bellman" was originally sold to Harlan Ellison's The Last Dangerous Visions decades ago, and appeared in Asimov's after Varley asked for it back. |
