Note that "Needle in a Timestack" was used as the title of story-collections (with differing contents) in 1966 and 1978 - neither of which contained this story from 1983. Consider it Silverberg's joke upon bibliographers. This is a comprehensive slice of a brief span of Silverberg's vast output, showcasing his most recent work at the time. "The Pope of the Chimps" is the one that I am most impressed with - it was a Nebula nominee.
