Galaxies Like Grains of Sand (1960) - a collection of stories, linked by connecting "history" (up to 4 or 5 pages, most are 1 page.) This is a variant of the British collection The Canopy of Time from 1959 - containing 7 out of 11 stories from that volume, and adding 1 story plus much-expanded interludes. This sort of variant collection and borrowing back and forth for American/British editions is typical for several British writers of SF short stories.

...The War Millennia:
Out of Reach
...The Sterile Millennia:
All the World's Tears
...The Robot Millennia:
Who Can Replace a Man? - (original title= "But Who Can Replace a Man?")
...The Dark Millennia:
O Ishrail!
...The Star Millennia:
Incentive
...The Mutant Millennia:
Gene-Hive - (original title= "Journey to the Interior")
...The Megalopolis Millennia:
Secret of a Mighty City - (original title= "Have Your Hatreds Ready")
...The Ultimate Millennia:
Visiting Amoeba - (original title= "What Triumphs")

The connecting "history" is original to the 1960 Signet paperback; the stories first appeared in Authentic SF. (2), New Worlds (2), Nebula (2), plus 1 each in Infinity and Magazine of F&SF, from 1957 or 1958.
