Theodore Sturgeon's A Way Home (1956) - an abridgement of the 1955 collection of the same title - which came out in hardcover from Funk & Wagnalls. All five printings in paperback (from 1956 to 1978) kept the same set of 9 stories, out of 11 in the 1955 hardcover (in the same sequence.) The 2 missing stories could be found in a different abridgement of that 1955 set - a 1957 British hardcover titled Thunder and Roses. That collection only had 8 stories (so 3 other stories got dropped instead.) Good luck finding that only unabridged edition (1955 hardcover) - so I feel safe recommending this set as a good example of Sturgeon at his prime.
