(Introductions by Malzberg, Van Vogt) Don't Hold Your Breath All We Have On This Planet War of Nerves The Rull The Semantics of Twenty-First Century Science (article) Future Perfect Being an Examination of the Ponsian and Holmesian Secret Deductive Systems (article) Home of the Gods The Violent Male (article) Prologue to The Silkie The Proxy Intelligence These stories originally appeared from 1947 to 1974 - in Astounding, Other Worlds, If, Vertex, The Pontine Dossier, Saving Worlds, Stopwatch, The Silkie. 2 of the articles appear to be original to this book. This is the second Van Vogt collection with this title (and quite different contents) - the first appeared in Britain in 1974. While this set of stories is an interesting selection of Van Vogt's work with some hard-to-find items, I will argue about the "best" part. The 1974 "Best of" was a decent representation of Van Vogt's best, or I would recommend the 2003 N.E.S.F.A. Press collection Transfinite, or one of the two classic collections that it drew upon heavily: Away and Beyond and Destination Universe. |
