Lifeboat, by James White - The passengers on the Eurydice were the usual varied lot, some nervous, some boisterous, some smart-alec, some quiet. The ship's Medical Officer was brand new and didn't anticipate having to do much more than take care of a few quesy stomachs and bruises among his charges - from learning how to deal with weightlessness. He figured his duties would mainly be one of a steward - ensuring that the customers have a happy and comfortable trip. It was a routine trip, and so was the safety drill. Until the disaster call went out... A slightly shorter version was serialized in Galaxy in 1972 as "Dark Inferno." British editions of this book use the serial title. |
