Original appearances from 1953 to 1959 - in Astounding, Infinity (2 or 3), SF. Quarterly, (The Original) Science Fiction Stories, IF, Galaxy, Magazine of F&SF. "Nor Iron Bars" as it appears here is actually a revised combination of 2 stories from Infinity: "Detour to the Stars" (1956) plus sequel "Nor Iron Bars" (1957.)

This is the original line-up of stories for James Blish's first collection, which has remained the same for all American printings. There are 2 British variants with the same title, and both share 5 stories from this line-up - but not the same 5 (only 4 in common between them.) The 1960 Faber hardcover substitutes 3 others for the 3 it dropped from the 1959 American original, and the 1963 Four Square paperback is simply a 5 of 8 derivative of the 1959 line-up.
