A shorter version was half of an Ace Double in 1963 as Listen, the Stars!, and it in turn was expanded from a short novel of that title in Analog (1962.)

I believe Brunner was at the top of his form in the late Sixties/early Seventies, and am quite willing to accept his many rewrites (of old Ace Doubles) during this period as improvements over the already good originals.
