The Panic Hand - a collection of stories by Jonathan Carroll. There are variant editions: British versions (1995-Hc, 1996-pb) have 19 stories; the expanded American hardcover (1996) has 20 stories - adding novella "Black Cocktail" at the end. (That was available in Britain as a seperate hardcover.)

To further confuse things, Jonathan Carroll's first collection appeared in German in 1989 (Die Panishe Hand - edited and translated by Franz Rottensteiner), with 12 stories in common with this 1995/1996 collection.

The story "Friend's Best Man" won the World Fantasy Award; novella "Uh-Oh City" was a Hugo-nominee in 1993. I voted for it, and will recommend this book on the strength of that novella.

"A Flash in the Pants" was new to the 1995 HarperCollins hardcover. The rest originally appeared from 1984 to 1994 - in Omni (4), Magazine of F&SF (2), Twilight Zone, Weird Tales (2), Penthouse, plus Time Out's Book of London Short Stories, Narrow Houses, A Child Across the Sky, Die Panishe Hand (in German), Black Cocktail. If you look at the credits page, 2 of these are attributed to A Child Across the Sky (1990) - which is a 1989 novel by Carroll. Perhaps the 1990 paperback had a couple of "bonus" stories?
