Brothers of Earth: Cherryh's second book - continuing to realize the potential revealed by her first book (she got the "best new author" John W. Campbell award in 1977.) I recommend this book - it convinced me that Cherryh was a writer of stature who would be around for long time.

The Alliance ship Endymion, which had pursued a Hanan ship from the destruction of the Hanan world Aeolus, and fought a battle in this system - in which both ships perished. Kurt Morgan was the only survivor, having ejected in a survival capsule at the start of the battle. He lands on the only habitable planet, and finds it settled by people who spoke Hanan, and had been at war with the Tamurlin for hundreds of years since they had landed on this colony of Aeolus. The Tamurlin were human, and fallen into barbarism since being driven from their machines. With all contacts to his past severed, Kurt commits himself to the life he can build here, involving himself in both politics and family - becoming a key figure in this culture's civil war.
