The Deep Range (from 1957) is a quiet, thoughtful novel about the Sea and Man's relationship to it, written by someone who loves the Sea and its wonders. Somewhat mysterious to his fellows since he is getting support from higher up, former spaceman Walter Franklin is taken through a crash course in becoming a Sea-Warden. Unable to return to his home, he must make a new place for himself, a new life- as one of the caretakers of the world's principal food source, the oceans.
